Residential

Veranda House

This mini house built within a tight budget for clients in their older years is in the midst of neem trees and occupies a small footprint of about 60 sq.m. Multi-purpose rooms connected by a central courtyard, and a spacious veranda provide a feeling of living in a bigger house within a smaller footprint.

The project is in Ettayapuram town in a shaded corner of the client’s ancestral property. The position of the existing trees and the client’s preference to view the happenings of the street from the safety of her home became starting points of the design.

CONCEPT

The design follows a simple organization of spaces connected to each other without explicitly dividing them into separate rooms. Each of these spaces has different heights and sizes depending on its function. The veranda and the courtyard connect these spaces. They open to the outside and function like outdoor rooms within the safety of the house. A large platform or thinnai links the house to the street.
